How much alcohol do you drink?
It is well known that answers to standard survey questions on alcohol consumption
contain a substantial underreporting. Less than half of the actually sold alcohol in a
country may be reported as consumed by survey questions. A major methodological project
called KALK searched remedies for this situation. Its main survey has 11.000
respondents. Every day for one year a sub-sample has been asked: "How much did you
drink yesterday?". Special questions deal with moon shining, smuggling, and other
non-taxed alcohol. Supplementary surveys deal with repeated offenders of drunken driving
and patients in clinics for alcoholics.
The sponsors of this project include most major commercial, administrative, medical and
social science interests in alcohol research in Sweden. Fieldwork has been carried out by
GfK Sweden and Statistics Sweden.
